1,000 Books before kindergarten
The Downers Grove Public Library challenges you to participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program!
Reading aloud with a child is one of the most important things a caregiver can do to help prepare them for Kindergarten. Reading aloud introduces children to new words and concepts, helps them learn about letters and sounds, and teaches them how print and stories work. It’s also a great way to bond with children and to encourage a love of reading!
How It Works
Patrons who sign up for the program receive a log to keep track of how many books are read, a suggested reading list to get started, and a book bag. Here’s how it works:
- Every time a book is read, color in one of the circles.
- After 100 books, bring the log back to the library for a new log, more books, and a small prize.
- After 500 books, readers get a bigger prize.
- At 1,000 books, both the child and parent will get a final grand prize.
