Property Tax Levy Facts

To help clarify some 2018 budgeting questions, here's a breakdown of recent numbers:

The library’s total property tax levy increased 2.5% in 2013, increased 3.7% in 2014, decreased 2.3% in 2015, decreased 2.2% in 2016, and increased 2.75% in 2017. The total property tax levy includes operating and bond tax levies. As of 2016, the library’s bonds were paid off.

Property taxes account for 96% of the library’s revenue. In the State of Illinois, public libraries are primarily property tax funded, with this percentage common among libraries.

Use of the Downers Grove Public Library has been record-breaking in recent years. In 2016, checkouts exceeded 1 million items, an increase of 4.6%. In 2017, checkouts to date are showing an increase of 12.1%.

It is important to note that property taxes are paid in arrears, so 2017 property taxes are paid in 2018 and fund the 2018 budget for the library.
