A Look Back at 2017

2017 was a year of planning and preparing for the future of the Downers Grove Public Library!

We defined our values, purpose, core services, and areas of focus in the Strategic Plan 2017–2020.

Experts evaluated the building and its systems, reporting on future capital repair and replacement needs in the Capital Assessment Report.

Staffing was realigned in response to the Strategic Plan and Capital Assessment needs.

A revitalized Downers Grove Public Library Foundation funded a new mural in the Kids Room, their first public art project since 2006.

The Illinois Library Association recognized two staff members with awards: Technical Services Manager Jen Fredericks won the TBS Technical Services Award and Teen Services Coordinator Lynette Pitrak won Young Adult Librarian of the Year.

Checkouts at DGPL continued to rise. We broke the one million checkouts milestone in November, earlier than any preceding year.

We continued breaking down barriers to service with more inclusive policies such as providing library card options for teens who come in without a parent and for residents of Downers Grove shelters.

Our library’s resolution for 2018 is a renewed commitment to being a warm and welcoming place to all who visit.

On a personal note, I’m resolving to get back to exercising regularly. Cliché, I know, but I’ll be in good company. I have downloaded an audiobook just for this purpose, so I’m ready to go!
