John McDavitt is a muralist, illustrator, and product designer who was born and raised in the Chicago area. His early aptitude for art sparked a career that includes designing, illustrating and sculpting toys, giftware, collectibles, and logos, as well as fine mural works for residential and commercial clients. His trompe l’oeil works, Solar System mural, and Train mural provided a joyful environment in the Junior Room prior to the 2014 renovation. At that time, changes were made that necessitated their removal. When the opportunity arose to acquire a new mural, it was fitting to return to the original artist whose work delighted the children of Downers Grove.
Muralist, illustrator, and product designer John McDavitt created the mural, titled Soaring, in the Kids Room in 2017. Books are flying from the library doors while the characters emerge from their pages midflight in this whimsical mural seen from a bird’s eye view. With its attention to detail, each open book tells its own story. The mural was generously paid for by the Downers Grove Public Library Foundation. See a time-lapse video of the work here.
